Reading
Once your child has chosen a book:
-
Discuss the title and what the book might be about (predict).
-
Use PAUSE, PROMPT, PRAISE to help them.
-
When your child becomes stuck PAUSE - Wait quietly while your child attempts the words on the page.
-
If they haven’t worked out the word within 5 seconds then PROMPT - Can you sound it out? Can you break the word into chunks? Are there any clues in the pictures? Can you try reading the sentence again from the start or read the rest of the sentence to help you?
-
PRAISE - support your child’s reading with lots of positive reinforcement.
-
Discuss new and interesting words. “What do you think that word means?”
-
Check for understanding by asking students to retell what they read.
-
Have discussions about the book, characters and plot. This will help your child’s reading comprehension and help them develop a love for reading.
